The Romantic String Quartets volume, published in the Music for Beginners series, contains works that remain within first position, with the easier pieces playable after just two to three years of dedicated instrumental study. The selected composers (Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Grieg) are represented by pieces that can be performed either individually or in suite form. A key consideration in selecting the repertoire was to ensure that, in addition to the first violin, the other instruments also have opportunities for soloistic roles. The third part is provided in both alto and treble clef versions, allowing the quartets to be performed in a three-violins-and-cello formation if a violist is not available.
